I purchased my first Sherline Mill sometime around 1985 and they are generally used along with my larger machines on almost a daily basis. Most of my work is one off type items on the small side where full blown CNC is not an advantage.
For a lathe the Sherline is probably "ready to make chips" out of the box, while the Taig needs a motor fitting and a bit more work, but it's possibly more flexible as the base for customisation. The sherline comes with a leadscrew and takes a lot of winding for long traverses, the Taig has a rack which is quicker, but less precise.

Started with the 3 axis CNC upgrade kit for my Sherline in Sept. 2009. Everything worked as expected. Came with Ubuntu 8.04. Have since upgraded to 10.04. Everything still works. Don't know what all the complaints are about. As with all software there is a learning curve. I use the Axis GUI. It was available with both versions.

The first step was to hack another jack on the Sherline controller box and connect it to parallel port bit 10. The process is pretty much the same as I used for the probe switch jack documented there. I actually put the jack in the hole used for the power LED and drilled a new hole for the LED smack in the middle above the connector.
